World coronavirus cases hit 1m, deaths pass 50K

Coronavirus infections across the world hit one  million with over 50, 000 deaths on Thursday, April 2, 2020.

Official data from the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that 1,009,452 persons globally had tested positive for the virus while 52,853 had died from the disease.

The data also showed that 211,878 persons had recovered from the COVID-19 infection.

The United States of America is leading the list of countries with the coronavirus infections after it recorded 25,392 cases in 24 hours, bringing its total number of cases as at April 2, to 240,395.

The country also recorded 706 new deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing its total number of recorded coronavirus deaths to 5,808.

Italy, the second country on the table is Europe’s worst-hit nation with 115,242 cases and 13,915.

Among a list of 183 countries affected with COVID-19, Spain came third with a total of 112,065 and 10,348 deaths.

South Africa is Africa’s worst-hit nation with 1,462 infections and five deaths.

Ghana’s confirmed number of COVID-19 cases rose to 204 Thursday with five deaths.

According to the Ghana Health Service (GHS), two of the infected persons are in critical condition.

The government of Ghana has locked down some cities which health authorities identified as the hotspots for the virus.

These areas are expected to observe a partial 14-day lockdown as part of efforts to contain the spread of the virus.

Despite the increasing number of coronavirus cases across the globe, the WHO says it expects the coronavirus curve to rise further.

Speaking at a press conference in Geneva on Wednesday, its Director General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, pointed out that the number of deaths had doubled in the last week alone.

“As we enter the fourth month since the start of the pandemic, I am deeply concerned about the rapid escalation and global spread of infection,” he said.
