2026 World Cup qualifiers: Five things we’ve learned from Ghana’s laboured win vs Madagascar

The Black Stars have again scored a late goal at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium to win 1-0 and kick off their 2026 World Cup qualifiers on a winning note.

Inaki Williams scored the only goal from a laboured win against an unfancied side.

Here are five things we’ve learned from the game:

Madagascar good start

Black Stars allowed Madagascar to get a good start to the game, which was not good for the atmosphere after what was said about the team after the October friendlies. Ghana should have had a flying start to keep the fans on their feet for the game.

Easy penetration of Ghana box

The Barea absolutely had no difficulty getting balls into Ghana’s box no matter which side of the defence they attempted to go through. This has happened throughout the first half and many spells in the second with Ghana not finding an antidote to it.

Madagascar more organized and purposeful

The visitors were more organized and purposeful in their play. Madagascar were the better passers, had a good defensive line, well-coordinated midfield and an attack that understood themselves.

Ghana butchered in the first half

The Black Stars were completely outplayed in the first half in every aspect of the game. Madagascar had more possession (55%), 3 shots on target against Ghana’s 1, and 32 dangerous attacks against the Black Stars’ 21.

Majeed Ashimeru the game changer

Despite coming off the bench only in the second half, the Anderlecht midfielder proved to be the difference, connecting Ghana’s game and providing the ball progression that was missing in the first half. He was the Black Stars best player on the day.
