Adu Boahen, BoG, Police part of over 120 cases under investigation – Special Prosecutor

Various cases against a former Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, Charles Adu Boahen, the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the Ghana Police Service and others are under investigation, the Office of the Special Prosecutor has said.

This was revealed in its half-year report on activities for the just-ended year.

The 13-page report offers an insight into the corruption cases investigated and prosecuted by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and the highlights of activities undertaken between August 1, 2022, and December 31, 2022.

With regards to Mr Adu Boahen, his case was referred for investigation by President Akufo-Addo following Tiger Eye PI’s documentary Galamsey Economy.

For the central bank, some unnamed officials are being investigated concerning the banking and financial sector crisis that led to the collapse of some banks and other financial institutions.

The investigation targets alleged corruption and corruption-related offences by some officials of the Bank of Ghana, banks, specialised deposit-taking institutions, and financial holding companies.

The Ghana Police Service is also being investigated regarding the recruitment exercise of Course 51 of Cadet Officers Training at the Ghana Police Academy.

The investigation targets specific cases of alleged corruption and corruption-related offences and acts of using the office for profit, abuse of office, abuse of power, favouritism, nepotism, victimisation and the selection of unqualified persons.

Also listed for investigation is the case of Akonta Mining Limited, a mining firm said to belong to the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) and its alleged involvement in illegal mining at a prohibited forest reserve.

The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG), Gaming Commission of Ghana, National Sports Authority, Ghana Water Company Limited, Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority, Airbus SE, and Estate of Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie alias Sir John are all under investigation.

The office is also investigating some 120 other cases at various levels of consideration. These cases will be publicised if the Special Prosecutor determines that they are within the mandate of the Office and that they should be moved past the preliminary investigation stage.

This policy is intended to protect the privacy of individuals and the business operations of institutions and companies and avoid unnecessary stigmatisation.
