AFCON2023: Senegal Dismiss Gambia

A second-minute surprise volley that stretched the Senegalese goalkeeper to limits turned out to be a flash in the pan. Thereafter,  the exchanges exposed The Gambia as no match for the Defending Champions.

Senegal settled down without much hassle and nudged The Gambia to the realization that they were in front of the best team on the continent, Senegal.  One goal in the first half, and two in the second, were all Senegal needed to dump their geographical neighbors.

The comfortable 3-0 victory was not achieved with delectable football, yet it does suggest results matter, the outcome of matches matters.  And so, the Senegalese forward players picked and utilized the scoring opportunities which fell to them. There was a great deal of ball sense in the manner those three strikes were directed at the goal.

The Senegalese have promptly established themselves as credible big boys of the African football tournament. This issues a warning to the other contenders that ”champions may die hard” if they die in this edition at all.
