Edem: It takes a lot to get to the Grammys

Ghanaian musician Denning Edem Hotor, popularly known as Edem, has weighed in on the ongoing Grammy discourse.

The Recording Academy introduced a new category; Best African Music Performance for the 2024 edition of the awards.

Tyla from South Africa and Burna Boy, Davido and Asake all from Nigeria have been nominated. Unfortunately no Ghanaian artiste received a nomination.

This has rekindled the debate as to whether indeed Nigerian artistes make better music than their Ghanaian colleagues.

In an interview with RazaSwaggy – the host of Rush Hour on Asaase Radio Cape Coast – Edem made it known that it takes a lot to get to the Grammys and Ghanaians are doing their best.

According to the musician, there are a lot of factors that come into play for one to earn a nod from the Recording Academy.

These include marketing, public relations, forging meaningful partnerships, and being signed to a good record label.

When asked by the host whether having links with key industry players increases the chances of one being nominated, he said: “I don’t think Grammy awards is some regional awards that is about links or who you know.”

However, the Volta Regime Music Group (VRMG) boss also believes that working with the right producers is equally important.

The musician further praised Ghanaian artistes for doing their best and reiterated his belief in the fact that it’s a process and eventually they would get there.
