Fire has gutted the Boys’ dormitory of the Koforidua Technical Institute(KTI) in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region.
The fire occurred around 11:45 pm on Monday, November 14, 2022.
It swept through about four dormitory rooms before personnel from the Ghana Fire Service (GNFS) arrived on the scene.
They were able to contain the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building.
75 occupants of the affected rooms lost all their belongings while 8 of them sustained various injuries.
The injured students were treated and discharged, with one person still on admission at St. Josephs’s Hospital in Koforidua.
It is unclear what caused the fire but preliminary investigations by GNFS pointed to an electrical fault.
Municipal Fire Commander, DO1 Emmanuel Acquaye said GNFS is set to hold a series of student engagements to educate them on fire management to avoid any such occurrence.
Bernard Forson, the Principal of KTI while speaking to the media called on the general public to come to the aid of the school.
Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for New Juaben North, Nana Adjei Boateng has donated GH¢20,000 to provide immediate relief to the affected students.
He added that he will engage the appropriate stakeholders to quickly fix the building to ensure academic work in the school is not affected.
