Former Ghana forward Joetex Frimpong disagrees with calls for Chris Hughton’s sacking ahead of 2023 AFCON

Former Ghana forward Joetex Asamoah Frimpong completely disagrees with calls for the axing of Black Stars coach Chris Hughton ahead of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

The 34th edition of AFCON is expected to take place from January 13 until February 11, 2024, with Ghana opening their account on January 14 against Cape Verde.

Ghana endured a torrid October international break, losing all two games against Mexico and USA and conceding six goals in the process.

However, there have been calls for the sacking of the former English Premier League manager but Joetex Frimpong thinks otherwise.

“With two months to the start of the AFCON, I don’t think it will be prudent to show Chris Hughton the exit door. When you sack him, it means you have to replace him with a new coach who will come with a different style and that’s not how things are done in football. Let’s give him a chance to lead the team to the AFCON; if he doesn’t do well, we fire him” he told Kessben FM monitored by Footballghana.com.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars are back to action next week for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Ghana will play Madagascar on November 17 before traveling to Moroni for the Comoros clash.
