Ghanareport projections: 96% of collated results see Akufo-Addo ‘cruising to victory’

Latest updates based on theghanareport.com’s highly placed intelligence reveal only 4% of valid votes cast remains to be counted.

Some 96% of all collated polling station results are in. That is 37,313 out of 38,933 polling stations. Only 1,620 polling stations remain.

The percentages garnered by President Nana Akufo-Addo and John Mahama are yet to be confirmed.

But at the previous update based on over 80% of polling station results, the governing NPP had garnered about 53.22% against the NDC’s 45.50% in the presidential elections.

That represented an 8% lead on the president’s main rival, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In real numbers, it represents a difference of 800,000 votes.

The NPP is projected to have obtained a little over five million votes against the NDC’s figure of over four million votes from the counting of over 29,000 polling stations out of 38,622.

The remaining 1,620 polling stations are still uniformly spread across the country, so it’s not like they are in any particular party’s stronghold alone.

This means the results from these stations are not likely to heavily favour any of the two main candidates.

Akufo-Addo already has over 800,000 votes more than John Mahama.

The total number of votes expected from the unreported constituencies would be under 600,000.

It is not likely that John Mahama would win all 600,000 votes. But if he did, 600,000 votes in his favour is not likely to put him back into the Jubilee House.

Ghana’s election results are being collated electronically, an efficient process likely to see the EC meet its promise of announcing the results within 24 hours.

Ghana’s electoral system requires that the winner obtains 50% plus one of the valid votes cast.

Anything less would trigger a run-off. In Ghana, there has been only two run-offs, all coming after eight years of the incumbent government.

It happened in 2000 after eight years of the NDC administration led by President Jerry John Rawlings and then again in 2008 after the NPP administration led by President John Agyekum Kufuor.

Theghanareport.com’s intelligence has posted three updates. First, at 72% of collated results, the president, Nana Akufo-Addo had 53.58% vs 45.15% for John Mahama.
