Judiciary working to catch up with AI – Justice Anthony Kwofie

A Court of Appeal judge, Henry Anthony Kwofie, says the judiciary is well prepared to tackle challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other technological advances that may threaten future prosecutions.

Justice Anthony Kwofie made this statement when he appeared before the Parliament’s Appointment Committee, chaired by the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, on December 20, 2023.

Nominated by President Akufo-Addo, Justice Kwofie, along with two others, has been put forward for consideration to join the Supreme Court.

According to him, introducing the E-Justice programme is one of the tools to address emerging technology concerns.

His response comes at the back of a question about the 2023 WASSCE, where results were withheld due to the use of AI-generated answers.

“What we are doing to try to catch up is to deal with the issue via the issue of E-Justice, computerisation. Those are the areas. But with respect to other areas, as and when the law changes, the judiciary will move in tandem with the movement of the law”.

“We will not be at a standstill because we ourselves are also part of society,” he added.

Justice Kwofie is one of the three new judges nominated by President Akufo-Addo for the Supreme Court.

According to the President, the appointment follows the mandatory retirement of three justices of the apex court earlier this year.

The other two nominees, yet to face the Parliament’s Appointment Committee, are Justice Yaw Darko Asare and Justice Richard Adjei-Frimpong.
