The Zongo Police in Kumasi have arrested seven Senior High School (SHS) for unlawfully blocking the Amakom road and disrupting traffic flow in the Ashanti Regional capital.

They are from Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASS), T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (AMASS) and Kumasi Academy (KUMACA)

The teenage suspects, aged 15 to 16 years reportedly blocked the road while returning from an Inter-schools Gala competition, held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

A report from the police said it took their intervention to clear the students from the road to ease the traffic congestion.

“Zongo Police received information that students from various schools within the metropolis participating in the ongoing Inter-schools Gala competition at Baba Yara Sports Stadium have blocked the road around Amakom traffic light, thereby causing nuisance to motorists and the general public.

“At the scene of crime, it was established that students from different schools were causing the nuisance and not only students of Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) as earlier anticipated,” the report said.

It added that the police managed to make some key arrests and cleared the road for vehicles and pedestrians to move freely.

Meanwhile, the suspects are still in police custody assisting with investigations.
