Mahama cannot be pressured to name a running mate – Ofosu Kwakye

Former Deputy Communication Minister, Felix Ofosu Kwakye says the NDC party was unperturbed by the pressure to name a running mate to partner their flag-bearer in this year’s elections.

He said “when it is time former President Mahama will announce who his running mate is and it will reflect the mood of the country and that running mate will restore seriousness which at the moment is missing.”

“When the Vice President speaks it should evoke seriousness, it should reflect a certain direction”, he added.

According to him, the Vice President Office is a place for sobriety and reflections.

He accused Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of what he called “defiling the office of the Vice President” adding that the National Democratic Congress when voted into power “will restore dignity” to the Office of the Vice President.

“So, President Mahama will choose someone who will restore dignity, level-headedness, sobriety to the office and above all the capacity to deliver” he added

Mr. Kwakye stressed that the Vice president office is not a place for an attack dog but rather a place for someone who partners the president, therefore Dr. Bawumia cannot be the standard for the NDC in choosing its running mate.

“President Mahama is not in the business of appointing someone who will match Dr. Bawumia” he noted

The aspiring Member of Parliament for the Abura Asebu Kwamankese constituency said the NDC is unperturbed by the pressures from the New Patriotic Party to name its running mate

“Low-level communicators within the NPP can engage in that discourse but you don’t expect government officials and the President, the Vice President, and people who should have more work on their table to engage in that kind of conversation.”

“Who the running mate of the NDC does not in any way impact on the ability of this government to deliver its promises” He noted

The  governing New Patriotic Party has challenged the opposition NDC party to name a running mate to partner their Flagbearer. They cite for instance that it has taken Mahama over a year to name a running mate.

The accuse John Mahama of finding it difficult to find a suitable candidate who match the caibre of Vice- President Bawumia.

The opposition NDC has rubbished that claim, saying Bawumia is certainly not their standard for measuring who becomes running mate to Mahama.

They allude many factors such as the COVID 19 pandemic as one of the reasons for which the name of the running mate has delayed.
