Nigeriens in Ghana picket Embassy to demand reinstatement of President Bazoum

Some Nigeriens in Ghana have begun picketing the Embassy in Accra to demand the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum.

According to the people, they want a continuation of the democratic rule the country has been enjoying over the years.

President Mohamed Bazzoum’s government was overthrown by the military on July 26, 2023.

The military junta has also stated its intentions to prosecute him.

In a statement read out on national television late on Sunday, a spokesman for Niger’s military laid out the charges against Bazoum as “high treason and undermining the internal and external security” of the country.

But according to the Nigeriens living in Ghana, President Bazzoum’s government has been the best in recent years.

While speaking to journalists, the concerned citizens insisted that the coup d’etat has brought untold hardship on their people back at home instead of the development the junta promised.

They are therefore demanding that the junta hands power back to him as the duly elected president of Niger.

“The president likes everyone. We don’t like the soldiers today, we don’t like them tomorrow. Apart from Bazzoum, we don’t have any president in Niger. We want democracy.

“We came to the embassy because the Ambassador likes democracy. President Bazzoum brought him here,” the leader of the group, Alhaji Suley Haruna said.

He also supported the Ecowas plans to deploy troops to restore democratic rule in Niger.

“Ecowas is supposed to follow the right way to drop the soldiers because they don’t have any right to take the country,”

Meanwhile, the group said they will continue picketing until the military junta reinstates the president.
