A pregnant woman has died on the spot in an accident at Gomoa Anteadze in the Gomoa West District on the Kasoa Cape Coast Highway in the Central Region.
Thirteen others are seriously injured and receiving treatment at the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, Apam St Lucks Catholic Hospital and Mankesim Hospital.
The unfortunate accident occurred on Thursday, December 29, 2022, around 5:30 pm.
According to reports, the driver of a Toyota Hiace commercial vehicle from Agona Swedru to Takoradi attempted to overtake vehicles in front of him but was unsuccessful as another car was approaching from the opposite direction.
Sensing danger, the driver then decided to drive on the shoulders of the road.
Unfortunately, he failed and drove into a ditch, causing the minibus to summersault several times, resulting in the instant death of a female passenger.
The Apam District Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire officer II Ankomah Nuamah, who disclosed this to the media, said when his office received the distress call, his officers swiftly responded and rushed to the accident scene.
He said the officers rescued the trapped passengers who were rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
Meanwhile, the body of the deceased has been deposited at the morgue.
Road accidents in the country
The country is losing its human capital to accident-related deaths, and productive lives are being rendered disabled due to severe injuries.
More than 200 people die monthly in road accidents in Ghana, the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has said.
The latest figure was for the period between January 1, 2022, and August 31, 2022, which accounted for 1,600 deaths.
This represents a 16% decrease compared to the same period in 2021, which recorded 1,800 deaths.
