Former Sports Minister wants Black Stars technical team dissolved

Former Sports Minister and Member of Parliament for Odododiodio Constituency Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has called for the dissolution of the entire Black Stars technical setup.

Coach CK Akonnor has come under fire in recent times following unimpressive performances of the team against Ethiopia and South Africa in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, and the MP wants action taken to address Ghana’s poor showing.

Despite winning the game against Ethiopia, the Black Stars lost 1-0 to South Africa in Johannesburg on Monday.

Mr Vanderpuye believes the shambolic performance of the Stars was not due to the head coach alone but the entire technical team and believes, if dissolved will be the best way to change the fortunes of the team.

“We saw the team play against Ethiopia and after the match, we were afraid of what was going to happen in South Africa.

“We were lucky we lost by one goal. Judging by their performance, the South Africans were not good, else they would have embarrassed us,” the former Sports Minister said in an interview with Starr FM.

He continued, “From what I hear, the coach is not the only problem. You have a system where people are pushing for their players to be in the team.

“What will be the reason to change CK? I believe it’s the whole technical bench, not CK alone. In the middle of world cup qualifiers, I don’t think it’s the time to change the coach.”

In October, the Black Stars will return to action for the second set of World Cup Qualifiers, which features a home and away tie against Zimbabwe.
