IGP Dampare Masterminded The Recording And Leaked The Tape – COP Mensah

COP George Alex Mensah, a senior police officer who is involved in the alleged plot to remove the Inspector General of Police(IGP), claims that the IGP was behind the recording and circulation of a private conversation he [COP Mensah] had with former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Northern Regional Chairman, Daniel Bugri Naabu.

The leaked tape contained secret conversations between COP Mensah, another senior police officer, Superintendent George Asare and Mr Naabu.

The tape contained several discussions, including suggestions on the NPP winning the 2024 elections.

According to COP Mensah, he had ambitions of becoming an IGP since 2017 and trusted Mr Naabu to lobby for the position for him.

However, Mr Naabu betrayed him and exposed their private conversations.

The tape caused controversy since it surfaced with Mr Naabu claiming that he instructed someone to record the discussions on his behalf to serve as proof when he meets with President Nana Akufo-Addo.

However, COP Mensah, a former Director General of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, firmly believes that IGP Dr George Dampare was behind the recording and how it got into the public domain.

Appearing before an ad-hoc committee constituted by Parliament to probe that issue, COP Mensah stated.

“Mr. Chairman, my intel suggests that what was used to tape the conversation was done by the current IGP. He sent some people to do it, after which he went for it. So, the tape, from my intel, is with the IGP, and he caused it to be leaked,” he said on the second day he faced the committee on Friday, September 1, 2023.

According to COP Mensah, if the committee was interested in the source of the original recordings, “the right person to call before this committee is the Inspector General of Police”.

Among other things, COP Mensah said the Ghana Police Service was heading in the wrong direction with Dr Dampare at the helm of affairs of the police administration,

“Honourable member and honourable chair, what I said yesterday, if you give me the opportunity today, I will say it again. For me, for the 31 years I have been in the service, he [Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr George Akuffo-Dampare] is the worst IGP ever,” he reiterated.

According to him, Dr Dampare has gagged members of the police hierarchy and is not open to dissenting opinions.

COP Alex Mensah is currently on leave pending retirement,
